When using standard tires on UST rims we recommend a rim strip for two reasons. Reason number one is that it makes inflation much easier. If you are using an air compressor, likely not an issue. Reason number two is to prevent/reduce burping of air pressure under heavy side loads. The rim strip fills the space between the beads and the rim "benches" and creates a tighter seal.
If your riding style and local conditions are such that you don't burp air without the strip, great but many people aren't so lucky with a standard tire on a UST rim. So that leaves a couple of options. One is to use your existing UST valves, some sealant, and a standard tire - harder to inflate, may burp too easily for some. Another is to just use our UST compatible valve stem which has a removable core allowing for greater air flow with the core removed and adding sealant through the valve - easier inflation, may still burp too easy for some. The third option is to add our standard or Olympic rim strips (do not enlarge the inner valve hole) - easiest to inflate, removable valve core for adding sealant, and creates a tighter seal at the bead. The standard rim strip is thicker and creates the best seal (about 56g) and the Olympic being a little bit thinner doesn't create as tight of a seal (about 38g).
